Lillian Burgess is an artist, an author, and a farmer,(also mother to Skyler, mother-in-law to Brenda, and grandmother to Emma!). Her passion for the natural world began with a childhood spent in Angola. One of five children in a Canadian missionary family, she left home at age seventeen to study in New Brunswick. After two years towards a BA, she began the hands-on learning that has continued through her life: a diploma in agriculture, apprenticeship in organic farming, and certificates in dairy-herd work, permaculture, and entrepreneurship.

Lillian’s artistic process includes writing and the visual arts, working in media as varied as gelatin monoprints and fabric quilts. Her name has reached readers through a regular column in Grey-Bruce Mosaic and essays in Wood Words: a celebration of forests.

A founding member of both the Saugeen Trading Community and the Skyhill Collective, she has applied her interests in permaculture and building community at Skyhill Farm for more than three decades.
